For most people, when Disney Studios released its first animated movie - "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" - in 1937, that was the moment when the first Disney princess was created.
It was a bold move by the studio - there hadn't been a full length animated movie up to that point - so it was something of a risk. Happily, for both Disney Studios and its many fans, the film was a critical and financial success. It pretty much set the whole Disney machine moving and secured its financial security for some time to come.
Snow White has since become synonymous with Disney - almost as much as Mickey Mouse himself. She will always have a prominent part to play in any Disney parade, and she'll always be there to greet her fans when they arrive at any of the various Disney resorts which are now dotted around worldwide.
However, just recently, there seems to be a growing body of opinion that SNow White was not the first Disney princess at all! Some bloggers are suggesting that honor actually belongs to Persephone, who was the star of "The Goddess of Spring", a Silly Symphony which was released in 1937, just ahead of Snow White.
In fact, it was basically used as a bit of a practice for the full blown Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs movie. Have a look at the video below and you'll definitely see some similarities between Persephone and Snow White:
Even so, it is still interesting to see Persephone's role in the development of the Disney brand.
In summary, Snow White is still the first Disney princess - but Persephone helped her to get there.
